The Seventh Hell

The Church in the northeast is once again under physical and verbal attack from assorted anti-Christian organisations, militant outfits and social groups. At least six Catholic priests have been killed in Manipur since December 2000 by Imphal valley-based militant groups who call themselves Vaishnavites and whose organisation seeks to safeguard Vaishnava heritage.

In Assam, taking a cue from the rss which has branded Christian missionaries as “footsoldiers of the western army”, the Asom Satra Mahasabha (asm), a federation of over 150 satras (Vaishnavite monasteries) in Assam, has blamed the Church for encouraging movements of secessionism in Assam and other parts of the northeast leading to political and social instability in the region.
