On Permanent Watch

Now that the Pakistani intruders are withdrawing, the Indian army is drawing up plans to ensure similar intrusions do not happen in the future. According to senior sources at army headquarters, the vigil along the entire stretch of the LoC from Matayen to Chorbatla in the Kargil sector is to be stepped up. ‘It will be an operation that will be three to four times the scale of the deployment we have in Siachen,’ says a senior army source.

If Siachen is estimated to cost about Rs 1.4 crore a day this figure goes up when the weather worsens the cost of manning the LoC in the Kargil-Dras-Batalik sector is projected to cost at least Rs 5 crore to Rs 6 crore a day. Or Rs 1,800 crore a year.
